I'm looking to find out info on a skinerii Cattleya and other orchids of costa rica. Any Ideas? Fragrance, color, how rare or plentiful, local distributers/growers... Like this kinda info. If ya know or just think ya know plz drop me a line at Sobezander@yahoo.com Hey, Thanks.
Where can I find Information on specific orchid names and attributes?
I'm not a great orchid resource, however, I'm a darned good plant finder!
I typed into my search engine, Michigan orchid, and found that we had a statewide orchid society. That would be my suggestion to you, your state orchid society.
They would be a wealth of info. especially on the care and culture of rare or exotic orchids. They probably will also know where you might be able to find the plants you're interested in.
I hope that this helps
Good luck-
Reply:Mail order catalogues for hobbyists are plentiful along every line you can think of and I'm sure orchids are no exceptions. There are also books which might be found at the library or on-line that catalogue many varieties of interest. Be sure to find out which varieties can be brought to the U.S. legally as well.

Why do my orchids grow a lot of aerial roots?
varieties are Oncidium and Cattleya
Why do my orchids grow a lot of aerial roots?
They pull moisture from the occasional rains and hold on to it for growth. The plants survive this way because of the environment which they live there is little or no soil from rooting. We have many orchids and we have them in gravel or lava pots. Water and mist every few days and they must be able to drain completely. If they we show signs of stress ,if not watered regularly. about once every 2 weeks soak the roots for 20 min. More often if they show stress... limb or thin leaves. Dont put in direct sun light. Lite dose of fertilizer can be used perhaps once a week, read the lables for use on this type of plant. The plants need daily rain like in a tropical jungle.

Reply:This is how they grow naturaly, they take moistuer and nutrians out of the air, spray these roots with an orchid feed 2 or 3 times a week.
Reply:it`s how they grow.lightly spray roots with tepid water,
Reply:Because that is what they do in the wild, They absorb nutrients and water from the humid air.
Reply:Orchids belong to a group of plants called epiphytes.
This type of plant can be found in deep forests, they grow high up in the tree canopy in order to get to the light.
They do not require soil to survive taking nutrients from the moisture in the air and rainwater.

Is detergent effective as insecticide for orchids? some orchid tips especially for vandas and cattleyas?
I would not use detergents on orchids because it's pretty harsh and could damage. It's not for certain but it's possible. You can get insecticidal soap at lawn and garden centers that are made to kill insects while not harming the plant.
You can also use a neem oil spray like 3in1 by Bonide. Its not only kills insects it has fungicidal properties also.

My cattleyas won't bloom. the climate is hot and dry. the leaves are green though.?
not so humid, used charcoal as potting medium and they're exposed to bare sunlight
My cattleyas won't bloom. the climate is hot and dry. the leaves are green though.?
The problem is hte dry part. Orchids are tropical plants and require high levels of humidity, usually between 45-60% humidity is required. For my Cattleyas I use a humidifier that is placed about two feet away.
how often do you water? Charcoal doesn ot retain much water and dries out very quickly. This is good in htat it prevents root rot, but especially in a dry environment means it will have to be watered every few days.
I would suggest repotting it in a mixture of charcoal and pine bark, watering every two to three days ( or when dry) and increasing the humidity.
Are the roots growing? Is there new growth, is a new pseudobulb growing? The roots should ne white with a green tip or transluscent. You should also see new growth on the orchid itself in teh form of a new pseudobulb, or branch. Once you see these things, you know it is healthy and will flower if it is large enough.

I have a cattleya orchid and the stem is getting brown and the flowers are drying out is this normal?
The old growth normally dies back to make room for new growth. Just give water and care as usual.

How to grow roses, cattleya and PHALAENOPSIS?.?
I'm from the Philippines and I'm having a hard time growing them. They always die. The roses die with white insects on the branches. My Cattleyas dont bloom and they have yellow green leaves. My PHALAENOPSIS never blooms and eventually dies..pls. help me. thanks
How to grow roses, cattleya and PHALAENOPSIS?.?
The White insects you can get rid of by spraying them with a mild solution of dish soap and water. Just get a 32oz spray bottle, add one teaspoon of dish soap, one teaspoon of light cooking oil, and fill with water. Spray very early in the morning to avoid sunburn on the rose leaves. This will kill the Aphids.
Here is a site on how to bloom you Cattleyas orchid:

Phalalenopsis: I'm not sure what could be going on with your Phal. I grow Phalaenopsis and haven't had any trouble. One thing you can try is once you phal has lost its bloom then repot it in an orchid bark mix, place it in indirect light, and water in when the bark is completely dry. This would completely depend on humidity. I usually have to water once a week. Also, don't use tap water. Use rain or distilled water to water your orchids.
Good Luck

I live in Phils.(tropical country). Im having a hard time maintaining my cattleya orchids.?
They usually die after 1 month or they would not have flowers at all. Unlike, dendrobiums that I can make them flower easily. The cattleya that im buying are not new cuttings but an established plants that the owners says its almost 1 year old, and I know its true. I water them 2x a days, exposed to sunlight for 2 hours/day and sprays fertilizers once a week.

You are probably watering them too much. Here's a trick that I learned from an orchid shop. Get a large bucket, about 5 gallons and fill it partially full of water. Dip the vase into the water until the water just goes over the top of the vase. Basically, you are soaking the entire ground in the vase. Pull the vase out of the water and let it thoroughly drain. Do this once a week, no more. If the orchid is a variety that has roots in the air, then spray them with a water bottle sprayer. The in-air roots should get misted about once a day. The in-air roots are for separate orchid plants that grow off the top of the lower orchid plants. Orchids don't like a lot of water and only need watered about once a week. For humidity, if you want, place the pot over a pan of water that has a bunch of pebbles in it. This will help keep the humidity high. Make sure not to get water on the leaves or down into the crevices of the plant. That could cause the leaves to rot. Also don't allow the leaves to rest on the pot or they could rot.

Reply:Orchids generally do not like to have soggy roots. The soil must drain very well.
If the roots are soggy the plants will die and they will not flower.
Try making the environment a bit more humid. Place it in such a position that it gets loads of light but only a little direct sunlight.
Do not move the plant around a lot - mine didn't appreciate being moved.
Try watering them less.

How do I get my Cattleya orchid to regrow its roots?
I have a small Cattleya that I left out on my balcony for too long. I live in southern California, but it was especially cold this year. I brought it in a couple of weaks ago and noticed that its roots have died. The leaves are still green and firm. Will the roots regrow when it gets warmer? Is there anything I can do to encourage root growth? What about watering?
How do I get my Cattleya orchid to regrow its roots?
only water it slightly
repot it in bark and potting soil and sand I think
Reply:You can put it in a jar of water for 3-5 days and it should start to grow roots.

What is the best planting medium, or food, or moss for cattleya orchids?
I am trying to grow a cattleya orchid, but I don't know a lot about them. I have been all over the internet, but they all say different things. I know that they have a special pot, and that the roots should dry between waterings. But does anyone know which plant food and medium are the best? I have saw sites that say to use coconut bark, charcoal chunks... And fertilizers... Ugh! 11-35-15, or 20-14-13... Help! I have a cattleya on the way and I already have a happy phalaenopsis (unless anyone knows a fertilizer I should feed him. :) ) Help! I already have a planting medium that is supposed to be made for phal's. Could I use that for the Cattleya? I love the cattleyas, and I want it to grow and be healthy. Any tips? Thank you!!!

i had lots of cattleya way back when I was living in a tropical country. every bloom is a sight to behold. I am always gifted with an all-year bloom because I adopted the technique employed by the nanny of my son, which is to put in wood charcoal and coco husks. Once in a while, you have to see though if bugs are comfortably residing amongst these mediums.
I wish I can grow them where I am now. Good luck to your quest for cattleya blooms.
Reply:we used charcoal bits in a pot and is well. we don't use chlorinated water. we use rain water to water them. we don't use any fertilizer

i have a cattleya i put it near the window, it grows a new leaf but it never bloom in whole year4
Why my cattleya orchid never bloom?
It's almost certainly not getting enough light. If it is healthy otherwise, try increasing the light it's getting (but NOT direct sunlight). Hopefully it will bloom within the next year.
Reply:Patience dear, let it get rootbound and flower profusely. shhhh. it's all good.

What is the meaning of the name Cattleya?
I've looked on every website I could think of and I even tried googling this name. I've heard the name used before so I know it's a real name. I think it sounds really pretty and want to use it in my story, but I want to know what it means first, or it origin or something.
So does anyone know what the name Cattleya means?
What is the meaning of the name Cattleya?
Its the name of a flower... like being called Rose or Lily...
Any of various tropical American, mostly epiphytic orchids of the genus Cattleya, much hybridized and extensively cultivated for their showy, variously colored flowers.
Reply:The girl's name Kathaleya \k(a)-thale-ya, kath(a)-leya\ is a variant of Kathleen.
The baby name Kathaleya sounds like Katla and Katelle. Other similar baby names are Kathaleyna, Kathleyn, Kathlena and Kathaleen.
Kathaleya is a very rare female first name and a very rare surname (source: 1990 U.S. Census).
Katherine =
Usage: English
Pronounced: KATH-u-rin, KATH-rin [key]
From the Greek name Αικατερινη (Aikaterine). The etymology is debated: it could derive from the earlier Greek name ‘Εκατερινη (Hekaterine), which came from ‘εκατερος (hekateros) "each of the two"; it could derive from the name of the goddess HECATE; it could be related to Greek αικια (aikia) "torture"; or it could be from a Coptic name meaning "my consecration of your name". The Romans associated it with Greek καθαρος (katharos) "pure" and changed their spelling from Katerina to Katharina to reflect this.
The name belonged to a 4th-century saint and martyr from Alexandria who was tortured on the famous Catherine wheel. Another saint by this name was Catherine of Siena, a 14th-century mystic. This name was also borne by two empresses of Russia, including Catherine the Great, and by three of Henry VIII's wives."
Or, Cattleya could be a combination of two names:
Catt = (from Catherine) pure (of Greek origin)
Leya = weary (of Hebrew origin) or ruler (of Assyrian origin)
Reply:Naming characters is always an interesting issue and more important than some people realize. Cattelya is the genus name for a group of Central and South American orchids. As to meaning, it doesn't have much since it is a latinized form of a person's surname. The genus was named that to honor a British patron of botony near the end of his career. His name was William Cattley This would be a unique name for a character, as far as I know and could be used to reveal something about a really "showy" character (All the orchids in this genus are supposed to be really fancy) or to contrast with a character whose attributes are opposite to the idea. Good Luck with the story.

When do I repot my Cattleya Orchid?
I'm a newbie to the wonderful world of Orchids and recently, I purchased a small Cattleya from a local flower store. It was not in bloom and was packaged in netting hanging from a peg on a display stand. The leaves are making it very top heavy and it will not stand upright in the plastic pot that it was packaged with. My question is, do I try to stand the pot up somehow or does it sound like it is ready for a new pot?
When do I repot my Cattleya Orchid?
Often orchids get tippy in pots... tends to be their nature.
They need repotted about every 2-3 years, not due to pot size but because you odn't want the soil breaking down to fine. Orchid soil should be thick, chucky and well draining much like beauty bark almost.
Chances are if you just bought it, it doesn't need repotted. My suggestion would be to find a nice heavy ceramic pot that the smaller plastic pot can sit/nest in, or go to a garden store and they sell orchid pots that are heavier ceramic (but about the same size as you probably currently have) that you could transplant it too for more stability.
or you can prop your current pot up.
Reply:The best time to replant catts is when they are just beginning to show new roots.
If the medium looks OK and there is no new root activity, leave it for now. Put the whole thing into a clay pot or other heavy container for stability.

How to deal with Cattleya Orchids.?
I bought a minature cattleya orchid (it's bright orange) from BB Barns in Asheville,NC in May 2004. It's now in Greenille,NC. When I bought it it was in full bloom and gorgeous. At first it just put out lots of new leaves and pseudobulbs but no new flowers. It then got severely dehydrated when I went on vacation and the person who was suppossed to water my plants forgot. Most of the leaves are kind of shrivelled and yellowish green rather than dark green. I've got it potted in sphagum moss and make sure it is kept moist and fetilize with Better Grow Orchid Plus and Better Grow Bloom Boost but it still looks like it is dying although I do have some new growth. I have been keeping it in a west facing window except in summer when it moves to a south facing window. I also have three other cattleyas bought more recently whose leaves are turning slightly yellow-green and some of the bottom ones have died. What can I do to bring it back to its former glory?
How to deal with Cattleya Orchids.?
I found this site, OrchidFlowersOnline that has great info for orchids heres a clip:
http://orchidflowersonline.blogspot.com/
Orchids are usually classified as warm growing, intermediate or cool growing, but most Orchids tolerate exposure to a wide variety of conditions without suffering (although most orchids don't do well when temperatures remain constantly above 90°F). The classification refers to the minimum temperture the orchid prefers during winter nights. Cool growers, such as cymbidiums, do best when nights drop to about 50°F, while warm growers, such as phalaenopsis, don't like it much below 60°F at night. Intermediate types, such as cattleyas, prefer night time temperatures between those two. More info listed there. i hope this helps you Dear.
Reply:Hi Jenny, I Live in North Carolina also, and I hope you visited the Biltmore House while in Asheville, its a lovely place. Try mixing some Miracle Grow with water and dampen the soil with this about once a week, but do NOT over water them. If you are seeing New growth it is coming back to Life.
Reply:Try a humidity tray, plenty of light but not direct sunlight, fertilize every week with a weak version of the fertilizer. Try some orchid medium, along with the sphagum moss, Try a good orchid fetilizer, also stop fertilizing when you see flower spikes, cut off dead pseudobulbs.

What do cattleya orchids smell like?
A friend of mine who makes perfumes recently made a floral perfume with orchid notes, and she said that the scent was that of a cattleya orchid; she called it a purple orchid. I've never smelled a real cattleya orchid before, but the smell of this perfume is fresh, brisk, floral, green and sweet. Would this be the smell of an actual orchid of this variety?
What do cattleya orchids smell like?
Oh yes. They have varied scents. Some have a decidedly spicey fragrance.
We have some that smell like fruit punch, chocolate, lemon, vanilla, peaches and more.
Perfume is strongest in the early morning.

I have just shifted my cattleya from a very shady place to a more sunny place (but still no direct sun).... the colour of the leaves turn a little reddish purple... it is ok or is the sun too much.....anyway, what is the best condition for Cattleyas, fertilization, watering, sunlight and media to plant... my cattleya produced new bulbs but seems unable to sustain flower from them

I have never heard of Cattleya leaves turning red, but Phalaenopsis leaves will do that when given too much light. What you are describing should be fine for your orchid. Cattleyas need a lot of light, with no direct light at the middle of the day when the sun is strongest. You can find detailed culture information on any orchid at the American Orchid Society's web page site.
Reply:Move to get some more light.
